An increase in the loading capability with more connections or longer trains is not possible. The single-track Furka tunnel operates at full capacity with the regional trains, the Glacier Express and the car transports. The 15.4 km long single-track Furka Tunnel has already reached its maximum capacity and offers no additional space. Train crossings are only possible at two points in the tunnel (Geren and Rotondo). More than 100 trains pass through the tunnel daily, including 30 regional trains, 2-8 Glacier Express trains, and 66 car shuttle trains. Two shuttle trains are available (one in Oberwald and one in Realp), each with 11 wagons, capable of transporting up to 44 vehicles per train. The trains cannot run faster. The HGe4/4 locomotives that pull the vehicle transports have a maximum permitted speed of 90km/h and the tunnel itself does not have the infrastructure for higher speeds. We increase the frequency of our vehicle transportation during the week when, according to our experience, a very high demand is likely to occur.
